“Yumm-O!” - Kernel Kustard

I decided to create a new installment in the blog - “Yumm-O!”  This will be a feature that appears when I try a new restaurant of type of food and I’ll let you know my thoughts.

Today, that new restaurant was Kernel Kustard in Winston-Salem near Hanes Mall.  Each Wednesday, I take part in an all-day staff meeting with my staff team and someone gets to choose our lunch locale each week.  Today the choice was Kernel Kustard, and the kustard made me think “yummy” which led to this new blog feature.

Kernel Kustard is a walk-up restaurant.  They serve burgers, hotdogs, and a few other sandwiches, as well as some really good kustard.  You walk up to one window to place your order.  Then progress to the next window to pick up your food.  They have neat trays with a cup holder in each corner - quite ingenious!  There are lots of tables all around the patio, some of which are under a heated tent area so you can enjoy the food even on chillier days.

I had a cheese burger with fries.  The burger was good, although not really anything special.  Same with the fries.  But a couple of the ladies with us have true Chicago experience and were pretty excited that Kernel Kustard offers authentic Chicago style hotdogs.  However, the kustard (the very namesake of the place) was quite good.  It actually made me think of my days in Clearwater on summer project in the summer of ‘08 when we would go to Rita’s - same atmosphere, etc.

I tried something called a Jumble - similar to a Blizzard at Dairy Queen, a cup of kustard with your choice of mix-in.  I got one of their specialities, the “Cereal Killer.”  It was vanilla kustard with Cap’n Crunch, Cocoa Pebbles, & Fruity Pebbles mixed in.  That added a nice lil’ crunch and additional sweetness.

Thanks for reading my first installment of “Yumm-O!”
